For small businesses and start-ups, directories are an excellent way to be found.  There are international directories that have localized country sites and those that are localized to a country, region, or even city.   It is very dependent on your products and services to which ones may provide the best value.  Many of the ones below have specific Canadian content.

The secondary value of the directory is to draw traffic to your website and other social media sites.  Most sites today will let you write a full description of your company and location information, your website, and even social media sites you have.  In addition, others allow you to submit information such as articles, participate in forums, and answer questions which will all help in providing credibility to you and your company along with drawing traffic to your website. Partner Up is a networking site which is for start-ups and small businesses. It provides the ability for a user to create a profile and interact through forums, post opportunities, and elicit advice from other members.

Team Biz is a Canadian based networking site for small businesses. It allows you to create a profile, submit articles, post an event and ask questions.
